A brilliant piece of American musical historySouthern Harmony is a shape-note hymnal, in which different notes have different shapes, enabling easy transposition between keys. The sopranos sing descants; the melodies are in the tenor voice.
And what melodies! The tunes (and lyrics) of this book will stun you with their plain-spoken power and beauty. Some (Amazing Grace, Rock of Ages) are familiar; some (Resignation --"My Shepherd Will Supply My Need"-- and Wondrous Love) are becoming better known; others have been arranged by contemporary musicians such as Alice Parker and Mack Wilberg. Many dozens of others are gems waiting to be mined.
The melodies in this book tend to display their Gaelic origins. Most are based on a pentatonic scale. Many are in minor keys, and many more are modal (especially Dorian, Phrygian, and Mixolydian). Harmonies are primitive but forceful.
This is an important part of our musical heritage. Anyone interested in church music will find Southern Harmony an inspiring collection that amply rewards hours of study.

Our family makes reference to this book every day...How would members of your family each react to falling off the Empire State Building? Who would say "We're dead!" Who would say "We'll be dead in 30 SECONDS!" Who would say nothing, but reach out for a paw to hold? And, who would say "So far, so good!" (me).
We've learned a lot about family relationships in a 1-beaver, 2-otter household. The Brawners draw on experiences as teacher, school principal, christian sports camp director, mother and father to deliver a wonderfully enjoyable, lifelong tool for fostering love and understanding at home. We've also given copies to several friends, and enjoy watching our kids' relationships grow as their 'zoo' personalities evolve. You'll want to share this one.

If you have any interest in the principles of music composition, this is a great book. My only comment is that points illustrated by quotations (which is most of them) are not always clear unless you can play or 'hear' the music - easy for Mozart, not so easy for Brahms, Debussy etc. Having a piano handy would help with this. Another solution would be to read this book in a music library and listen to the relevant works as they come up - in fact I hope to do this sometime myself.
Overall highly recommended for students of music - it's a breath of fresh air after all the traditional dogma.
